Her Majesty's Government of Gibraltar will reply in detail in the coming days to the statements made by Spanish Foreign Minister, Snr Garcia Margallo this afternoon.
In the interim, the Government will immediately deal with the remarkable and untrue statements made both by Snr Garcia Margallo and the Spanish Minister of the Interior who have both said that "Gibraltar does nothing to control tobacco smuggling."
As has already been stated publicly, on 19th August 2013, the Spanish right wing group Manos Limpias issued a complaint addressed to the European Commission against the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo and the Governor of Gibraltar, complaining of alleged breaches of EU environmental law and the law of the sea. At the foot of the complaint, Manos Limpias made a defamatory statement about the Chief Minister. The statements in question also referred to His Excellency the Governor, Sir Adrian Johns.
On Tuesday Morning, Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Joseph Garcia visited the frontier queue complaints counter and the frontier monitoring control office, in the Air Terminal Building.
The office has been open for less than two weeks but has already received 263 complaints both on-line and in person. The majority of the complaints are being submitted on-line by persons of different nationalities who have been made to wait in a frontier queue enter or exit Spain.
