Government Signs MOU With University Of Gibraltar And MMS For Researching And Assisting Seafarers Mental Wellbeing

The Ministry for the Port, the University of Gibraltar and Maritime Medical Services Limited (MMS) have signed a MOU with the aim of establishing a Centre of Excellence for Seafarer Health and Mental Wellbeing in Gibraltar. The ultimate goal being to respond to current societal needs as well as shape personal and professional futures through the pursuit of education, training, and research.

Gibraltar Represented At The 6th International Swift Conference

Research carried out by Gibraltarian scientists was recently presented at the 6th International Swift Conference, recently held in Segovia, Spain. The biennial conference was due to take place in 2020 following the 2018 conference in Tel Aviv, Israel but had to be postponed due to the COVID 19 pandemic.

Dr Johnson famously wrote, ‘lexicographer: a writer of dictionaries: a harmless drudge.’ In the publication mentioned above we have four ‘drudges:’ Tito Vallejo-Smith, Manuel Cavilla, Johannes Kramer and Juan Manuel Ballesta Gómez, henceforth referred to as TVS, MC, JK, and JMBG, respectively. Though Johnson was being self-deprecatory, having himself devoted many hours to producing a massive dictionary, our ‘drudges’ are to be thanked for attempting to encode Llanito, collecting vocabulary, providing definitions and tracing provenance.

This innovative, ambitious project was initiated and overseen by a team of academics, including the internationally renowned novelist, Mark Sanchez. The academics involved are the following: Professor Elena Seoane (University of Vigo) and Professors Cristina Suárez-Gómez and Lucía Loureiro-Porto (University of the Balearic Islands). The introduction was written by Mark Sanchez and Elena Seoane.
