European Commission Executive Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič, Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation José Manuel Albares and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, together with the Chief Minister of Gibraltar Fabian Picardo, met in Brussels earlier today.
The Government of Gibraltar has today corrected the misunderstanding made by certain Spanish media outlets reporting on the Chief Minister’s statements on yesterday’s BBC Radio 4 ‘Today’ programme. They note that some media outlets have significantly altered the meaning and intention of Mr Picardo’s statements, taking them out of context.
For example Europa Press, claimed, ‘Picardo has warned of the risk that Guardia Civil patrols continue ‘their incursions into BGTW without advance warning and, when coming in from the sun, remaining unidentifiable for those carrying out provisioning of British or American vessels.’
The Defender of Gibraltar this morning attended the Magistrates Court in support of Julio Pons, of the Voice of Gibraltar Group, as he answered to charges relating to yesterday’s incident at the Frontier that saw him cut the rope, holding up the EU Flag.
The Defenders explained today that the matter was adjourned to the 13th December without any pleas being entered. They encourage members of the public to support Julio and attend the case at 10am on the morning of the 13th of December.
The GSD Opposition condemns the recent queues in the strongest possible terms. It is in this unhappy and worrying context that the GSD Opposition comments on the European Commission's decision of last Friday as it promised to do last week. The GSD continues to take a very serious view of the Commission's failure to condemn the clearly politically driven nature of Spain's recent measures at the frontier.
