European Commission Executive Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič, Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation José Manuel Albares and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, together with the Chief Minister of Gibraltar Fabian Picardo, met in Brussels earlier today.
The Gibraltar Disability Society says it “cautiously welcomes” the “unreserved apology” by the Editor of the New People for its use of a word offensive to persons with disabilities and their families. The apology came shortly after the publication of press releases by the Disability Society and others expressing its outrage and calling for a public apology.
The Government, on the advice of the Director of Public Health, has reduced the requirement for individuals who test positive for COVID-19 to self-isolate to 7 days starting from the day of the original positive PCR test, with specific conditions attached. The editor of the New People has “unreservedly apologised” for the use of a word which has been considered to be offensive to people with disabilities. A statement issued this afternoon says there is “no excuse” for the failure to spot the offence that the word would create adding that it “will not be used again.”
