European Commission Executive Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič, Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation José Manuel Albares and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, together with the Chief Minister of Gibraltar Fabian Picardo, met in Brussels earlier today.
According to the Government, the current difficulties at the border with Spain are not having any impact on the local tourist product or on the quality of Gibraltar as a top tourist destination.
David Cameron has called the Spanish leader Mariano Rajoy in an effort to reduce tensions. Apparently, Mr Rajoy told David Cameron that he is committed to reducing checks at the frontier and agreed to calm the current row.
At around 4am today, 7th August, officers of the Royal Gibraltar Police, arrested three Spanish nationals and three local men following an operation to combat tobacco smuggling.
