Gibraltar’s representation at the Labour Party Conference continued yesterday evening with the Gibraltar Reception hosted by the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and featuring a keynote speech by the UK Minister for Europe and the Overseas Territories Stephen Doughty MP.
With the Miss World Beauty Pageant’s Finale set for this weekend, Muslim extremists have threatened to attack the pageant, which they have dubbed ‘pornography’. The Daily Mail reports that the finale has been moved to Hindu-majority Bali where extremist influence is minimal.
The pageant was set to take place in Jakarta, Indonisia. Miss Gibraltar, who currently poses as number 1 people’s choice, is currently in Indonisia for the pageant.
Six A Level students will travel with the Government to the meeting of the United Nations 4th Committee in New York next month, during which Gibraltar is a topic of discussion.
The Department of the Environment is expanding Government’s kerbside recycling service to include Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) bins. The bins will be placed next to existing recycling bins at Cloister Ramp, Moorish Castle Estate, Devil’s Tower Road, Waterport Road, Williams Way Catalan Bay and Rosia Road.
The Minister for Sport and Leisure, Steven Linares, has today announced that, as part of the policy to develop tourism through sports and leisure events, arrangements have been completed for Gibraltar’s first Backgammon Festival.
The event will be held between the 14th and 20th October 2013. On 14th and 15th a local qualifying event will be organised by a group of local backgammon enthusiasts, working to develop backgammon in Gibraltar. The venue selected by them is Latino’s at Casemates.
