The Government says it notes, “with disappointment”, the European Parliament’s objection, today, to the entry into force of the European Commission’s decision to remove certain jurisdictions, including Gibraltar, from the EU’s list of ‘high-risk’ third-countries with strategic deficiencies as regards anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (“AML/CFT”).
The Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia has accused the Spanish Government of behaving in a cavalier and irresponsible manner in the waters around Gibraltar thereby endangering the wider interests of the Western World. Dr Garcia made these comments in an event in Washington organised by the Heritage Foundation.
On Sunday 1 May we commemorate International Workers' Day and the historic struggle of working people throughout the world. In Gibraltar that struggle has been hard fought through the generations to get to where we are. Often the advancement of our rights as a people has gone hand in hand with that struggle. The struggle for parity, for example, was not just about equal pay with our UK counterparts. It was also part of our struggle for emancipation as a people. Today our workers enjoy conditions that our forefathers could only dream of. May Day is a day we gratefully celebrate their sacrifices.
