Gibraltar’s representation at the Labour Party Conference continued yesterday evening with the Gibraltar Reception hosted by the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and featuring a keynote speech by the UK Minister for Europe and the Overseas Territories Stephen Doughty MP.
The Government has said that it regrets the recent statement from the Heritage Trust that ex-MOD quarters in the south district are being bought by millionaires from abroad and are demolished with modern mansions built in their place because it has the potential to “mislead the public.”
This morning an 11-gun salute was fired to mark the arrival of the new Commander of British Forces, Commodore Ian McGhie MA RN, who took over the position today from Commodore John Clink, following 20 months in the job.
Childine Gibraltar have been working closely with the GSLA Summer Sports programme this summer providing weekly, short activities for the 12+ age group. This week's activity focussed on anti-smoking and participants had to create posters that responded to various statements made by smokers, such as "All my friends smoke" and "The damage is already done". The Health Promotion Department of the GHA kindly provided leaflets about the dangers and effects of smoking and these were used by the young people to research how they would respond to the smokers.
