European Commission Executive Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič, Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation José Manuel Albares and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, together with the Chief Minister of Gibraltar Fabian Picardo, met in Brussels earlier today.
The Government has said that it is “saddened” to learn of Barclays’ decision to reduce the size of its footprint on the Rock as it reviews its business worldwide. In particular, the Government is disappointed that the bank’s Main Street branch will close next year, resulting in the loss of a number of jobs and of Barclays’ local banking services.
Following the announcement that Barclays has made today, Unite the union have said that they feel that this is a “very sad day not only for its employees, but also the Gibraltar community as a whole.”
After a thorough review of its presence in Gibraltar, Barclays Bank has announced that it will no longer be offering local banking services in the future and that, as from October next year, it will close its Main Street branch.
