Gibraltar’s representation at the Labour Party Conference continued yesterday evening with the Gibraltar Reception hosted by the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and featuring a keynote speech by the UK Minister for Europe and the Overseas Territories Stephen Doughty MP.
Addressing approximately 300 delegates at the Brazil Hedge Fund Forum, Minister Gilbert Licudi insisted that Gibraltar ‘has now firmly positioned itself as a strong EU alternative to Dublin and Luxembourg for the establishment and management of hedge funds.
Minister Licudi also noted that Gibraltar was now specifically targeting New York and Latin American funds and fund management as it proved to be the jurisdiction of choice in Europe for funds. He added that he expected the funds sector in Gibraltar to grow in a way, which would make Gibraltar a significant player in the global funds industry.
The Gibraltar Rotary Club will be hosting a Spring Ball on Saturday 13th April in order to raise funds for Mental Health. The ‘evening of elegance and style’ good food, good wine and excellent company’ will be held in the new Royal Gibraltar Yacht club. Entertainment will be provided, including table games and dancing to Peter Charles.
Monarch’s Inaugural flight from Birmingham to Gibraltar was met by Minister for Tourism Neil Costa, along with members of the Tourist Board, including Miss World 2009, Kaiane Aldorino and the Re-Enactment Society, on Saturday morning.
The flight is set to operate between Gibraltar and Birmingham on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays up until the end of April when it will run Sundays instead of Saturdays.
As a reward for his notable acts of courage whilst serving on an operational tour in Afghanistan last year, Pte Liam Downs of the Gibraltar Regiment has been awarded a ‘Mentioned-in-Despatches’ (MID).
When a soldier is ‘Mentioned-in-Despatches’ his name appears in an official report written by a senior commander to his superiors, detailing the conduct of a military operation and describes a soldier's gallant or meritorious action in the face of the enemy.
