Gibraltar’s representation at the Labour Party Conference continued yesterday evening with the Gibraltar Reception hosted by the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and featuring a keynote speech by the UK Minister for Europe and the Overseas Territories Stephen Doughty MP.
As an issue recently covered by YGTV, the announcement by Minister for Urban Renewal Dr. John Cortes on the beautification and renewal project of the Upper Town, was very much welcomed today by the press. The plan covers the opening up of a number of areas, including a garden situated between Castle Ramp and the Engineer’s Lane Car Park. The project will also see extensive street beautification and new links developed between Road to the Lines and Castle Road.
Dr. Cortes insisted that the Government wished to develop the Upper Town as a destination, perhaps even for tourists. He noted that following these works, he hoped to see retailers and restaurants open up in the area.
Monday the 17th of June will see the launch of the second quarterly operation to make our roads safer, the RGP’s Operation Roadwatch. This two-week campaign is being launched with a small video clip which highlights the dangers posed to all road users by bad driving. In the video clip a young local woman, victim of a road traffic accident, relates how in a matter of seconds her life was irreversibly changed. We take this opportunity to thank her for her courage and support.
As part of an ongoing programme to equip union representatives with the necessary skills to represent members, Unite the Union is organising an innovated two part course on improving working relationships especially collective bargaining between employers and trade unions. This innovated programme will be in two stages.
The TP Towage tug team this morning assisted in the very delicate operation to bring in the Sunborn floating hotel from its transporter ship just off the Detached Mole to its berth on the South Mole next to the entrance to GibDock.
