May 15 - Operation Tracer Launched

operation tracerMonday evening saw the exceptionally well-attended launch of Gold Productions’ documentary, ‘Operation Tracer’. The film outlines the history of one of Gibraltar’s most well kept secrets, ‘stay behind cave’ and its use during the Second World War. The story follows the theoretical capture and invasion of Gibraltar by the Germans during World War II and the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve personnel’s plan to get buried alive inside the cave in order to spy on the Germans and report back to Radio London.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Cortes, standing in for Culture Minister, Steven Linares, explained that he first heard of the cave from the GONHS cave unit after they discovered the cave on Boxing Day 1996.

May 15 - Another Navy Vessel in the Bay

hms ledburyThe fifth Royal Navy vessel to visit Gibraltar in the past fortnight Minehunter HMS Ledbury has sailed into the Naval Base today on a short visit to top up on supplies before heading into the Mediterranean. The vessel left Portsmouth last week on a four month NATO Mine Counter Measures Group 2. The group works throughout the year defending sea routes from the threat of underwater mines. They also carry out joint training exercises.

May 15 - PDP Welcome Government Commitment to Restore Sandy Bay

pdpThe PDP has today welcomed the Government’s ‘major coastal protection and beach regeneration at Sandy Bay. The party has previously pushed the administration to restore the beach and to build groynes to protect the area from further erosion. They note that the request fell on deaf ears with the former administration.

The PDP insists that a number of other aspects of the beach also contribute to its name, ‘the forgotten beach’, including the lack of car park spaces for beach goers, the ‘third world toilet and changing facilities’, the lack of police presence, and the lack of the beaches’ own lifeboats.

May 15 - Wii Fit for Hospital Physiotherapy Department

rgp wii donationThe RGP Charity committee yesterday donated a Nintendo Wii and a Wii Fit Plus to the Physiotherapy Department at St. Bernard’s Hospital.

The devices were presented by Commissioner Eddie Yome and Charity Committee member Inspector William Gomez and received by Caroline Abrines, Physiotherapy Services Manager and Gail Carreras, Senior Paediatric Physiotherapist. They were accompanied by Kyle and Michelle Porro, aged eight who look forward to making use of the donated equipment in due course.
