European Commission Executive Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič, Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation José Manuel Albares and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, together with the Chief Minister of Gibraltar Fabian Picardo, met in Brussels earlier today.
"I am very happy and satisfied that Gibraltarians now have the ability to play football at official and international UEFA level. This will no doubt improve the level of facilities and encourage our youngsters to aim for the sky. This is a very happy day for Gibraltarian football and Gibraltar as a whole.
"I welcome the fantastic news that the Gibraltar FA has finally been admitted to UEFA. It has been a monumental effort by Team 54 and their supporters. For 120 years football has been an important part of life in Gibraltar for young and old alike and this is a big step in promoting further sporting development.
The Gibraltar football team has just been granted full membership of UEFA. The team becomes the 54th nation to be recognised by European football’s governing body.
