minister balbanThe Government this week gave effect to commence it electoral commitment, “El Turno” which involves the cleaning of internal communal areas in large Government rental housing estates.

A number of approved contractors under the cleaning scheme have been tasked with the weekly cleaning of landings, lifts, staircases and other communal areas of residential blocks.

Apr 05 - Gibraltar Attends FIA World Touring Car Championship in Marrakech

fiaThe Gibraltar Government will host a stand at the Marrakech FIA World Touring Car Championship, today. During the event, Gibraltar will have its own stand at the track, showcasing the Rock’s many products and services to the Moroccan public attending the event, which has become one of the highlights of the sporting and social calendar in the Kingdom of Morocco.

Miss World 2009, Kaiane Aldorino will also attend, along with Tourism Minister Neil Costa. Kaiane, who has featured prominently in the marketing of the championship, will start the race on Sunday.

Apr 05 - Local Customs Officer Assaulted in La Linea

customsA local Customs Officer was assaulted in La Linea last week as he was speaking on his mobile phone. At around 5:30pm the officer was repeatedly hit with wooden planks, by nine men. The Guardia Civil were alerted and arrived shortly after the assailants made their escape. The man was escorted by the Guardia to the hospital where he received treatment and released shortly after.

Apr 04 - Government Updates Legislation – Criminalising Human Trafficking

government logoThe Government has today published a legislation criminalising human trafficking and such associated activities as sex trafficking and forced labour. The new legislation, which includes measures to protect any victims of human trafficking, transposes Directive 2011/36/EU through amendments to Gibraltar’s Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act and the Crimes Act.

Although Gibraltar is not a destination for trafficked persons, Justice Minister Gilbert Licudi insisted that the real significance of the amendments is that Gibraltar is determined to stay ahead of its requirement to transpose relevant EU legislation into local law.
