The Self Determination for Gibraltar Group (SDGG), in conjunction with Gibraltar Cultural Services (GCS), is pleased to announce the programme of events for this year’s National Day, to be held on Tuesday 10th September at Casemates Square, John Mackintosh Square and Governor’s Parade.

This morning, a number of prominent groups, at the forefront of the Community gathered in the lobby of the City Hall, where Chief Minister Fabian Picardo uncovered a plaque, commemorating International Women’s Day. Commenting on Gibraltar’s first Women’s association, named the Housewives Association of which, his mother was one of the founding members, along with Mariola Summerfield, Mr Picardo explained that the group played its part and ‘became a spring board for political women and for the continuing activity of the association itself’.
Chief Minister, it has been decided to widen the scope of the Mayor’s Awards Scheme.
The Scheme, which at present only recognises persons who save a life or participate in any such rescue operation or act of bravery, will now also encompass persons or groups who have served Gibraltar in exceptional or voluntary service over a prolonged period of time.
Twelve Officers from the City Fire Brigade have successfully completed two Rope Rescue Level 2 Supervisor Courses which were held recently around Gibraltar, under the supervision of Mr Malcolm Stephen from the Outreach Rescue (North Wales).
This course which gave the officers the opportunity to conduct specialist training in the setting up and supervision of different rope systems for a variety of rope rescues. Such rescues could take place on roof tops, steel structures and confined spaces as well as in natural environments.
